The Hearts of Iron series is about taking control of your nation of choice in the years around World War II (1936 to 1948) and leading it to victory. So, before we dig into what makes Hearts of Iron IV different and special, let me talk a bit about what the series is all about so that everyone has some grounding. In light of our recent successes like Crusader Kings II and Europa Universalis IV, I realize that we probably have a lot of new faces with us - people might not have tried the earlier Hearts of Iron games. We showed off an early pre-alpha build of Hearts of Iron IV at ParadoxCon in Miami last month, so some information is already out there. It has almost been five years since the release of Hearts of Iron III, and though we released a few expansion packs during this time, it is really exciting to finally get the chance to do a proper sequel!

My name is Dan Lind and I´m the project lead for Hearts of Iron IV, an updated and improved version of Paradox Development Studio’s World War II themed grand-strategy game. We start the missiles dev diary series with an overview of the missiles GUI with its six legers.Welcome to the first development diary for Hearts of Iron IV! The nukes will come with a completely reworked nuclear system, including nuclear status, doctrine and program. Finally, there will be a greater variety of warheads including nuclear warheads of different yields. Where there are satellites, there will also be anti-satellite weapons. These will be accompanied by the new satellite system and the orbital launch vehicles to bring the satellites to orbit. The core of the new system are the GUI-based ballistic and cruise missiles and their counterparts on the defensive side, the surface-to-air missiles (SAM) and the anti-ballistic missiles (ABM). 'Missiles' or 'Missiles System' is our working title for that part of the mod, but it's far more than just a few missiles, that are already provided in some kind by vanilla. Creating an AI for such an huge GUI and new system is an task for its own, so we decided to do it step by step and don't delay the release further and include the AI later. The Missiles AI will be very, very basic in our 1.6.0 release. The offensive missiles will target and damage buildings and the air defenses will work as modifier. The missiles won't be able to damage units directly.

It will provide anti-access/area denial tactics with the reworked air defense system.īut like all modders fate, the limits are hardcoded, so there are some things we can't mod (yet maybe PDX give us the tools to do so in the future). From the role as escort and invasion support, ships will become a significant strategic asset – offensive and defensive.

It will feature land, sea and air launched missiles and explore outer space as battle space.

It will hopefully turn the mod from its origin as World War 2 game into a full spectrum modern era grand strategy game. The missiles system will change the way of warfare in Millennium Dawn forever.
